Den Hoorn has only had this name since the twentieth century — in old deeds it appears as Dijkshoorn, as early as 1317. The village was then part of the Hof van Delft, the manor around the city. Across from Den Hoorn, on the Gaag toward Schipluiden, lay the hamlet of Hodenpijl, with a medieval castle. During the Hook and Cod wars in 1351 and 1393 that castle was destroyed — never rebuilt.
For centuries Den Hoorn was a rural village: small farms, meadows, paths along canals. From the seventeenth century the first market gardens appeared along the Dijkshoornseweg and the Noordhoornseweg — modest greenhouses, family businesses. The image that defined Den Hoorn for centuries — ribbons of houses along meadows and ditches — remained recognisable well into the twentieth century. The photo above, with the Old Jacobus Church of Hodenpijl reflected in the Vlaardingse Vaart, shows that landscape as it still appears today.
In the 2000s Den Hoorn changed rapidly. Around 2002 about three-quarters of the growers offered their businesses for housing development. Where greenhouses once stood, neighbourhoods now stand. The old ribbon along the Dijkshoornseweg has remained visible, but the village has grown considerably — now with a commuter population that has Delft, The Hague and Rotterdam within easy reach.
