Kwintsheul was probably mentioned as early as the thirteenth century — in a deed of donation from Emperor Arnulf to a Count Gerald, an estate near 'Huul' appears, which would refer to the present-day village. The name itself is a compound: Kwint (possibly an old personal name) and Heul (bridge or fordable place in the water). Until around 1600 Kwintsheul was not yet a village — just a handful of farms at intersections of canals and small roads.

That changed in the seventeenth century. At the junction of the Wateringen–Naaldwijk road and the Holle and Lange Watering, a hamlet emerged. Much meadow was converted into orchards; the village grew with the rising horticulture, which would later — from the nineteenth century — become Westland glass cultivation. The village church on the Kerklaan is of later date, but the old orchard structure is still visible in the plots between the new neighbourhoods.

Kwintsheul long had an administrative problem: it belonged simultaneously to Monster, Loosduinen (and thus The Hague from 1923), Naaldwijk and Wateringen. After a 150-year struggle — with municipal councils, committees and complaints — the village finally fell under one municipality on 1 July 1957: Wateringen. In 2004 Kwintsheul, along with ten other cores, merged into the current Westland municipality.

Today Kwintsheul is still small: compact, green, with the church in the photo above as its visible centre. That small scale makes the days pleasant, but isn't always practical when you need something. The laundry, however: that comes to us. We run a set pickup day through Kwintsheul — Hollewatering, Bovendijk, Kerklaan. Your bag goes along in the morning, and comes back in the evening clean and ironed at your door. Same driver, same time, every week.
